Mapping the Landscape of Optometric Education in Sub-Saharan Africa Online
Optometry is a vital healthcare profession dedicated to the care of people’s eyes and vision. Optometrists serve as the primary eye care providers — they assess visual function, manage refractive and binocular vision anomalies, and play a critical role in the early detection of ocular and systemic diseases. They are often the first professionals individuals consult when experiencing visual difficulties or seeking preventative eye health advice.
This panel discussion will explore findings from a collaborative research project titled Mapping the Landscape of Optometric Education in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study was conducted by Western Sydney University (WSU) in partnership with the University of the Highlands and Islands (UK), the University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), and other academic institutions across the African continent, under the leadership of Professor Uchechukwu Levi Osuagwu.
We are pleased to invite you to a panel discussion of optometry education experts who will share key insights from this landmark report.
Event Highlights:
- Clinical Relevance: Learn how strengthening optometric education can help address the global burden of visual impairment by equipping practitioners with the skills to deliver high-quality, accessible eye care services.
- Background: Explore the substantial growth in the number of optometry programs in Sub-Saharan Africa since 2000, a reflection of increasing regional commitment to eye health.
- Key Findings: Gain insights into the current state, challenges, and opportunities in optometric education, drawing on data from 32 of 39 optometry schools across 12 countries in the region.
This event brings together key stakeholders from across the continent — including academic institutions, national optometry associations, and regulatory bodies — to reflect on the report’s recommendations and consider future directions.
The session will also highlight emerging opportunities for international collaboration, including the establishment of a new eye center at Westmead and potential research partnerships with the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research.
Register now to be part of this pivotal discussion aimed at advancing optometric education and mitigating vision impairment in Sub-Saharan Africa.
