Exhibition: Spirit & Sound

Exhibition: Spirit & Sound In-Person

This exhibition highlights Associate Professor Bruce Crossman’s works, Heaven to Earth Border House Project, and Gyeonggye: Border as well as performances of his works by friends and collaborators. This exhibition includes visual and audio elements.

Bruce Crossman is an Associate Professor of Music in the Music and Music Therapy Discipline, School of Humanities and Communication Arts at Western Sydney University. He is a composer with interests across the visual arts, East Asian architecture, poetry and music (classical, traditional world and improvisatory musics) with a focus on Asian-Pacific musical identity. Professor Crossman has achieved international recognition with performances in Australasia, Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines), Europe and the USA.

‘Gyeonggye’ means ‘border’ in Korean, and this work depicts the composer’s journey through sorrows. It is revealed through the spiritual existence in nature and the materiality of the sound breathing inside. For the film Gyeonggye, the concept is a type of travel metaphor (not literally) but with Korean traditional Gugak performance movement through physical locations of arches, gravestones into the hidden bush within a London cemetery (Abney Park in Stoke Newington). The idea is to move from hidden beauty within the bushscapes of the graveyard into skyward ascendance, and slowly return to arches/gravestones/hidden bushes within the cemetery as ‘grief reflection’ and ‘healing’.

This exhibition runs from 11th March – 4th May, 2025 in the Penrith Campus Library Gallery Space. Admission is free.

Please check the library website for current opening hours.
