Fiona Salisbury – Academic Literacy Advisory Group Update
Executive Director Library Services and Chair of the Academic Literacy Advisory Group Fiona Salisbury will provide an update on the work initiated by the Academic Literacy Advisory Group this year. This will include discussion about Phase 2 of the Academic Literacy Strategy for embedding academic skills support in the curriculum and the development of a framework for Western Sydney University focused on the key literacies of academic literacy, digital literacy, generative AI, and numeracy.
Dr Sarah Fletcher – Fletcher's 4S Method of Adult Literacy
Dr Sarah Fletcher is an accredited linguist, adult education consultant and creator of Fletcher's 4S Method for adult literacy. In this presentation she will introduce this method designed for enhancing literacy skills in adults in a range of academic and professional contexts, based on her PhD research that explored the development of structural academic writing skills in university students.
Daniel O’Sullivan – Academic Literacies as Meaning-Making: Language, Tools, and Pedagogical Pathways
Daniel O’Sullivan is a Learning Advisor at James Cook University, Singapore campus and PhD Candidate in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the University of Leeds researching practitioners’ experiences in the English for academic purposes (EAP) field, with the aim to bring more credibility to the field. His presentation will provide some preliminary insights from his PhD research, and focus on his recent publication regarding pedagogic interventions for teaching critical reflection in higher education.
This Community of Practice has three key aims:
- To engage with the scholarship of teaching and learning
- To discuss best approaches to developing equitable academic literacy support at Western Sydney University in alignment with the university-wide Academic Literacy Strategy
- For Academic staff, professional staff, and students to share best practice examples, resources, and shape academic literacy at WSU
