Living with Misinformation: Empowering Communities Through Media Literacy Online

How can we navigate an increasingly complex information environment and build trust in what we see, hear, and share? In this Thought Leadership event, Professor Tanya Notley will present insights from the Living with Misinformation project, a three-year research initiative exploring how people experience and respond to misinformation in everyday life.

Tanya Notley is Professor in the School of Arts and a member of the Institute for Culture and Society at Western Sydney University where she leads the Advancing Media Literacy in Australia research program. Tanya is a founding member of Australian Media Literacy Alliance. This presentation builds on a 3-year research project she led to examine the everyday experience of misinformation and explore how cultural institutions and community organisations can prepare people.

Drawing on research and practical community engagement, Tanya will introduce a media literacy guide that offers tools and strategies for individuals, libraries, schools, community organisations and policymakers. The session highlights how media literacy can strengthen informed citizenship, community resilience, and democratic participation, contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Quality Education (SDG 4), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16).

Join us to explore how research-informed approaches can help empower communities to navigate misinformation and build a more informed and resilient society.
