Exhibition: The Next Generation Project In-Person
This exhibition showcases a series of collaborative artworks created through The Next Generation Project, an initiative of Western Sydney University Library and the Wellbeing and Belonging Team. This Indigenous-led project was proudly supported by the Penrith campus provost.
In keeping with the spirit of this year’s NAIDOC Theme – The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy – the Next Generation Project brought together the youngest members of our community with Indigenous students and staff to create art that speaks across generations. The resulting works invite us to see NAIDOC not only as a celebration but as an enduring legacy passed on to those who will shape our future.
The project began with NAIDOC Week Storytime sessions at WSU Early Learning Centres, where children engaged with stories and songs with an Indigenous librarian Lauren Castino (Wiradjuri Gamilaroi). The children then put their handprints on a large canvas, with many enjoying selecting their favourite colours. Each canvas was then taken to a Badanami centre for a Wellbeing Cafe run by Heidi Duncan (Darug), where Indigenous students and staff added contributions that reflected their own style and stories. Students and staff were able to yarn and learn more about the Wellbeing and Library services on offer at Western.
Following the exhibition, five canvases will be returned to each WSU Early Learning Centre as a gift to the next generation of young leaders who will carry the vision of NAIDOC into the future.
This exhibition will run from 29th October 2025 in the Penrith Library Exhibition Space.
